Experienced practitioners looking for a deeper immersion in yoga
Students interested in anatomy, movement, mobility, and hands-on teaching
Yoga enthusiasts seeking intensive training

- Yoga is adaptable. Throughout the training, we work with different bodies, abilities, experiences, and needs. Modifications and alternative approaches are an integral part of the program.
- Previous injuries, pregnancy, or other individual considerations do not automatically exclude you from the training. We will work with you to find appropriate ways to practice.

A Teacher Training Built on Experience
Adarsh Williams has been practicing and teaching yoga for more than 25 years, with decades of experience in Ashtanga Yoga, movement, anatomy, mobility, assisted stretching, and bodywork.
His teaching combines the traditional methods of Ashtanga Yoga with contemporary approaches to anatomy, functional movement, mobility, and student-centered teaching.
The result is a training that respects the roots of yoga while preparing you to teach in the modern world.
You won’t simply learn how to demonstrate a yoga pose.
You’ll learn how to see, understand, adapt, communicate, and teach.
Learn by Doing
This is an experiential teacher training.
Rather than spending the majority of your time sitting in a classroom listening to lectures, you’ll spend substantial time practicing, observing, teaching, receiving feedback, and working directly with other students.
You will learn to:
Practice → Observe → Understand → Teach → Receive Feedback → Refine
This process is at the heart of the training.
You’ll work directly with Adarsh and your fellow trainees throughout the program, developing practical teaching skills while receiving immediate feedback and individual guidance.

Your 200-Hour Curriculum
The training follows the educational categories and standards established by Yoga Alliance while maintaining a strong emphasis on traditional yoga practice, practical teaching skills, anatomy, and experiential learning.
100+ Hours — Traditional Yoga Practice & Technique
Asana
Asana study includes postures from the Primary and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga, presented in a traditional but non-dogmatic way.
You’ll develop a practical understanding of:
- Major posture categories
- Forward and backward bending
- Twists and lateral movement
- Inversions and arm balances
- Alignment and functional movement
- Modifications and adaptations
- Therapeutic considerations
- Creative sequencing
- Traditional sequencing
- Restorative asana
- Sanskrit pronunciation
- Tristhana: breath, posture, and gaze
You’ll also learn to recognize what is happening in a posture rather than simply memorizing a set of alignment instructions.
Pranayama & Meditation
In traditional yoga, breath provides a bridge between the external practice of asana and the internal practices of meditation.
Training includes:
- Preparatory breathing practices
- Pranayama
- Kriya and traditional cleansing practices
- Mantra
- Meditation
- Mindfulness
- Sitting and walking meditation
30+ Hours — Yoga History & Philosophy
Yoga is a vast tradition with thousands of years of history, multiple lineages, philosophical systems, teachers, and texts.
You’ll explore the development of yoga and gain context for the practice you are participating in today.
Topics include:
- The history and development of yoga
- Yoga timeline
- Yoga lineages and parampara
- The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
- Traditional yoga philosophy
- Introductory Sanskrit
- Comparative yoga traditions
- Yoga as a lifestyle
- Ethics and the teacher’s role
The goal isn’t simply to memorize dates, Sanskrit terminology, or philosophical concepts.
It is to understand the context behind the practice and begin developing your own informed relationship with yoga.
25+ Hours — Teaching Methodology
Knowing yoga and teaching yoga are two different skills.
This part of the training focuses on developing the practical skills required to lead a safe, effective, and engaging class.
You’ll learn:
- How to plan and structure a class
- How to teach individual postures
- Sequencing
- Demonstration
- Verbal instruction
- Communication skills
- Working with different learning styles
- Observation and feedback
- Adapting a class in real time
- Developing your own teaching voice
- Building confidence as a teacher
Throughout the training, you’ll have opportunities to practice teaching and receive direct feedback.
20+ Hours — Anatomy, Mobility & Movement
Understanding anatomy helps a teacher move beyond simply telling students where to put their bodies.
You’ll study the human body through the practical lens of yoga and movement.
Topics include:
- Functional anatomy for yoga
- Major muscles involved in yoga
- Joint actions and movement
- Mobility and flexibility
- The science of stretching
- Strength development
- Movement limitations
- Common considerations and risks
- Applying anatomy to asana
- Reading and observing the human body
The emphasis is practical: How does this information actually change the way you teach?
10+ Hours — Hands-On Adjustments
Hands-on teaching is one of the distinctive features of this training.
You’ll learn how physical and verbal assists can be used appropriately to help students understand movement, explore a posture, or receive additional support.
Training includes:
- When to adjust
- When not to adjust
- Who to adjust
- What to adjust
- Where to place your hands
- How to apply an adjustment safely
- Teacher body mechanics
- Receiving adjustments
- General vs. specific adjustments
- Verbal vs. physical assistance
- Student consent and safety
- Developing sensitivity and awareness when working with another person’s body
Hands-on work is taught as a skill, not as a collection of techniques to memorize.
Personal Practice & Personal Development
The best teachers remain students.
Throughout the training, you’ll be encouraged to deepen your own practice and develop a personal understanding of what yoga means to you.
Your training will include:
- Kriya and traditional cleansing practices
- Pranayama
- Meditation
- Sanskrit chanting
- Yoga history and philosophy
- Yoga ethics
- Study of the Yoga Sutras
- Yoga as a lifestyle
- Comparative yoga traditions
- Developing a personal philosophy
- The seat of the teacher
- Teacher self-care
- Sustaining your personal practice
- Finding inspiration
- Yoga beyond the mat
The goal is not to give you a philosophy to repeat.
It is to give you the tools, experience, and knowledge to begin developing your own.

What Past Teacher Training Graduates Are Saying
Wonderful!
My experience with Adarsh was wonderful, eventful, and a memorable one. I’ve been practicing yoga for three years and taken several teacher training programs as well as workshops and conferences. The Ashtanga yoga teacher training program at the Shala is exceptional. The knowledge shared with the students was extensive.
— Kathryn Henderson
Extraordinary!
At the end of an immersion students usually want to leave at the end of the day and go home to rest, play etc. At this training, every student just wanted to stay and absorb more of the knowledge and continue to experience the special feeling of the shared Yoga. It was extraordinary!
— Elizabeth Mathisen
Five stars!
What I always take with me from Adarsh’s class is the feeling of ‘Yes I can do this’.
The feeling I carry on knowing that every hardship can be tackled one yoga pose at the time.
That is why I always come back to renew and re-energize myself.
— Angelynn Dang
FAQs
Do I need previous Ashtanga Yoga experience?
No. Previous Ashtanga experience is helpful, but it is not required. The training introduces the fundamental principles of Ashtanga Yoga while also exploring yoga more broadly. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience.
What matters most is a sincere interest in yoga and a willingness to practice, study, and learn.
Do I need to be flexible or able to do advanced yoga poses?
Absolutely not.
You do not need to be particularly flexible or able to perform advanced postures to participate in the training. Yoga teacher training is an opportunity to understand the practice more deeply, not a test of physical ability.
We work with different bodies, abilities, limitations, and levels of experience. Learning how to adapt yoga for yourself and for your students is an important part of the training.
Is this training suitable for beginners?
The training is designed primarily for committed yoga practitioners and aspiring teachers. While you do not need years of experience, you should be prepared for a substantial commitment to practice and study.
If you are relatively new to yoga but feel strongly drawn to teaching and want to immerse yourself in the practice, please get in touch. We can discuss whether this training is appropriate for you.
Do I need to intend to become a professional yoga teacher?
No.
Many students complete teacher training because they want to teach professionally, but others are primarily interested in deepening their own practice, understanding yoga more thoroughly, or developing a stronger foundation for their personal and professional life.
The skills you develop through teacher training can be valuable whether or not you eventually teach public classes.
Is this an Ashtanga Yoga teacher training?
Ashtanga Yoga is an important foundation of the training, particularly in our approach to asana, breath, sequencing, practice, and traditional yoga methodology.
However, this is not a training designed to teach only one particular style of yoga. You will also study anatomy, movement, mobility, teaching methodology, yoga philosophy, meditation, pranayama, modifications, sequencing, and approaches for working with different students.
The goal is to give you a broad foundation while maintaining a strong connection to traditional yoga practice.
What happens if I have an injury or physical limitation?
Yoga can be adapted to many different bodies and circumstances.
We place a strong emphasis on understanding movement, recognizing individual differences, and learning appropriate modifications. Previous injuries, pregnancy, or other physical considerations do not automatically prevent you from participating.
Please contact us before enrolling if you have a significant injury, medical condition, or other concern that may affect your participation so we can discuss your situation.
How much physical practice is involved?
The training is experiential and includes regular asana practice, meditation, pranayama, workshops, observation, and teaching practice.
You should expect the program to be physically and mentally engaging, but the goal is not to push yourself toward increasingly advanced poses.
Learning to practice intelligently, adapt movement, and understand the needs of different bodies is an essential part of becoming a good teacher.
How much time should I expect to spend outside the training weekends?
The eight in-person modules provide 192 hours of training, supplemented by 8 hours of online instructional content.
In addition to attending the modules, you should expect to spend time practicing, reviewing course material, completing assignments or self-study, and developing your teaching skills between weekends.
The more you engage with the material between modules, the more you’ll get from the training.
What happens if I miss a training weekend?
Because the training is highly experiential, regular attendance is important.
If an unexpected circumstance prevents you from attending a module, please contact us as soon as possible. We will discuss what material can be made up and what additional work may be required.
Specific attendance and make-up requirements will be provided before enrollment.
What is included in the tuition?
Your training includes:
* 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training
* Teacher Training Manual
* Movement & Mobility Manual
* Training videos
* All required course materials
* In-person workshops and teaching practice
* Direct guidance and feedback throughout the training
There will be no requirement to purchase a separate collection of expensive training materials.
Is the training registered with Yoga Alliance?
Yes.
The program is offered through a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School (RYS 200).
Upon successful completion of the 200-hour program, graduates may apply for the RYT 200 credential with Yoga Alliance, subject to Yoga Alliance’s current registration requirements.
Where does the training take place?
The training takes place at the Ashtanga Yoga Groningen Shala in Groningen, Netherlands.
The shala provides an intimate environment for practice, workshops, discussion, and hands-on learning.
What happens after I complete the training?
Completing the 200-hour training gives you a foundation from which to continue developing as a yoga teacher.
You will have practical experience teaching, a foundation in yoga technique and philosophy, anatomy and movement knowledge, and experience adapting yoga for different students.
You can then continue developing your teaching through experience, mentorship, further education, and your own personal practice.
What if I’m interested but I’m not ready to register yet?
That’s completely fine.
