About The Shala

A shala for practice, study, and community.

Ashtanga Yoga Groningen is a traditional Ashtanga Yoga shala in Groningen, dedicated to Mysore-style practice, Led classes, study and the development of a long-term relationship with yoga.

A shala is more than a yoga studio.

It is a place where students return regularly, practice together, learn from a teacher and become part of a community.

What is a shala?

The Sanskrit word śālā can refer to a hall, house or place of practice.

In the Ashtanga tradition, a shala is the place where students come to practice yoga under the guidance of a teacher.

Unlike a conventional fitness studio, a shala is not primarily organized around classes that you attend occasionally.

It is built around practice.

You come regularly.

You learn progressively.

You develop a relationship with the teacher and the people you practice alongside.

Over time, the shala becomes familiar.

The room, the people, the sounds and even the early mornings become part of your practice.

That is what we are building at Ashtanga Yoga Groningen.

Intention

Practice first. Our intention is simple:

Create a place where people can practice yoga seriously, consistently and together.
